ANNA UNIVERSITY COIMBATORE REGULATIONS - 2007 DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE (TEN SEMESTERS)
The following Regulations will be applicable to all Architecture colleges/schools/Institution affiliated to Anna University Coimbatore other than autonomous colleges. In case of all autonomous colleges, the regulations, curricula and syllabi of the respective college shall be approved by the Syndicate of the University.
1. Preliminary Definitions and Nomenclature
In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires:
- “Programme” means B.Arch. Degree Programme.
ii) “Course” means a theory or studio based subject that is normally studied in a semester like
Mathematics, History of Architecture, Materials and Construction, Architectural Design,
Electives, etc.,
iii) “University” means Anna University Coimbatore.
2. Admissions
Candidates for admission to the first semester of ten semesters B.Arch. Degree Programme
shall be required to have any one of the following qualifications:
a) 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognised board with English,Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as a subject of study by securing 50% marks in aggregate
or
b) 10+3 Diploma (Architectural/Civil) recognised by central / state governments with 50% aggregate marks
or
c) International Baccalaureate Diploma after ten years of schooling, with not less than 50% marks in aggregate and with mathematics as compulsory subject of examination.
or
d) Any other examination of any University or Authority accepted by the Syndicate of this university as equivalent thereto.
2.2 Notwithstanding the qualifying examinations the candidate might have passed, he/she shall also write an aptitude test as contemplated by the Council of Architecture in the minimum standards of Architectural education regulations, 1983 and notified in the Gazette of India, Part III section 4, dated 28th March 1983 and 27th August 1983.
2.3 All admissions to B.Arch degree course shall be subject to National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA). Conducted by Council Of Architecture.
2.4 The other eligibility criteria such as number of attempts, physical fitness shall be prescribed by the Syndicate of the University from time to time.
2.5 The candidate shall not have completed 21 years of age as on first of July of the year of application. For candidates belonging to SC/ST the age restriction is relaxable upwards by 3 years.
3. Structure of the Programme
- The programme shall have a curriculum comprising of theory, theory cum studio and studio
based courses with well-defined syllabi. The courses shall cover Humanities and Social Sciences subjects, Management subjects, Basic Engineering subjects and relevant professional courses.
There shall be a certain minimum number of core courses and sufficient number of elective courses that can be opted by the student. The blend of different courses shall be so designed that the student at the end of the programme would have been trained not only in the professional field but also would have developed as a socially conscious human being.
- The curriculum structure of each semester shall normally be a blend of theory courses not exceeding 5 and studio based courses not exceeding 4. However, the total number of courses per semester shall not exceed 7.
3.3 The medium of instructions, examinations and project report shall be in English.
3.4 In addition, every student shall successfully complete:
- A practical training in the VII semester for exposure to architectural profession.
- A thesis work in the X semester.
- One compulsory educational tour apart from site/field visit.
NCC/NSS/NSO/YRC activities for character development.
4. Duration of the Programme
A student is ordinarily expected to complete the B.Arch. programme in 10 semesters but in any case not more than 16 semesters. Each semester shall normally consist of 90 working days, 450 hours, or 540 periods of 50 minutes duration. The Principal/Director shall ensure that every teacher imparts instruction as per the number of periods specified in the syllabus and that the teacher teaches the full content of the specified syllabus for the course (subject) being taught.
5. Faculty Advisor
To help the students in planning their courses of study and for general advice on the academic programme, the Head of the Department will attach a certain number of students to a teacher of the Department who shall function as Faculty Advisor for those students and monitor the courses taken by the students, check the attendance and progress of the students attached to him / her and, counsel them periodically. If necessary the faculty advisor may also discuss with or inform parents about the progress of the students.
6. Class Committee
6.1 Every class shall have a class committee consisting of teachers of the concerned class, student representatives and a chairperson who is not teaching the class. It is the ‘Quality Circle’ with the overall goal of improving the teaching-learning process. The functions of the class committee include:- Clarifying the regulations of the degree programme and the details of rules therein.
- Informing the student representatives the academic schedule including the dates of assessment and the syllabus coverage for each assessment.
- Informing the student representatives the details of weightage used for each assessment. In the case of studio and theory cum studio based courses (architectural design / drawing / thesis etc.) the breakup of marks for each design/exercise/module of work, should be clearly discussed in the class committee meeting and informed to the students.
- Solving problems experienced by students in classroom, studios and in the laboratories.
- Analyzing the performance of the students of the class after each test and finding the ways and means of solving problems, if any.
- Identifying the weak students, if any, and requesting the teachers concerned to provide some additional help or guidance or coaching to such weak students.
- The class committee for a class is normally constituted by the Head of the department.
6.3 The class committee shall be constituted on the first working day of any semester or earlier.
- At least 4 student representatives (usually 2 boys and 2 girls) shall be included in the class committee.
- The Chairperson of the class committee is required to invite the Faculty advisor(s) and the Head of the Department to the meeting of the class committee.
- The Principal/Director may participate in any class committee of the institution.
- The chairperson is required to prepare the minutes of every meeting, submit the same to the Principal/Director within two days of the meeting and arrange to circulate among the concerned students and teachers. If there are some points in the minutes requiring action by the management, the same shall be brought to the notice of the management by the head of the institution.
- The first meeting of the class committee shall be held within one week from the date of commencement of the semester, in order to inform the students about the nature and weightage of assessments within the framework of the Regulations. Two or Three subsequent meetings may be held in a semester at suitable intervals. During these meetings the student members representing the entire class, shall meaningfully interact and express the opinions and suggestions of the class students to improve the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process.
7. Procedure for awarding marks for Internal assessment
7.1 Attendance and assessment record
Every teacher is required to maintain an ‘ATTENDANCE AND ASSESSMENT RECORD’ which consists of attendance marked in each theory or studio or theory cum studio class, the test marks and the record of class work (topic covered), separately for each course. This should be submitted to the Head of the department periodically (at least three times in a semester) for checking the syllabus coverage and the records of test marks after due verification. At the end of the semester, the record should be verified by the Principal who will keep this document in safe custody (for five years). The University or any inspection team appointed by the University may inspect both current and previous semester records of attendance and assessment.
Theory based courses
The Internal assessment will be carried out through three evaluations of 100 marks each conducted by the Department / Institution. At least two of the evaluations should be in the form of a test. The total marks obtained in all the evaluations put together in equal weightages out of 300 shall be reduced to 50 marks and rounded off to the nearest integer.
Theory cum studio based courses
The evaluation will be carried out for 50 marks. A minimum of six evaluations should be made out of which at least two should be in the form of a test. The weightages for the evaluations shall be 60% (30marks) for continuous evaluation and 40%( 20marks) for unit tests.
Studio based courses-architectural design
The evaluation will be carried out for 150 marks through continuous internal assessment of the performance of the candidate throughout the semester and for 150 marks through the viva-voce examination at the end of the semester, based on the portfolio of class records of the candidate. The viva-voce will be through a panel consisting of an internal examiner and an external examiner appointed by the University.
Practical training
The evaluation will be carried out for 100 marks through internal assessment based on the monthly progress reports received from the respective offices imparting training and for 200 marks through a viva-voce examination conducted at the end of the semester. The viva-voce will be through a panel consisting of an internal examiner and an external examiner appointed by the University.
Thesis
Every candidate shall submit at the end of X Semester a thesis on the topic approved by the thesis review committee constituted by the Head of the department which shall comprise of the supervisor of thesis, internal members, and two or more external architects. The thesis shall be evaluated for 300 marks by the review committee through continuous internal assessment with a minimum of four reviews and for 200 marks through a viva voce examination at the end of the semester. The viva-voce will be through a panel consisting of the Head of the Department and two external examiners appointed by the University. The supervisor of the thesis may also be present in the examination.
8. Requirements for Completion of a Semester
A candidate who has fulfilled the following condition shall be deemed to have satisfied the requirements for completion of a semester.- Ideally every student is expected to attend all classes and secure 100% attendance. However, in order to allow for certain unavoidable reasons such as Medical / participation in sports / personal, the student is expected to attend at least 80% of the classes.
Therefore, he/she shall secure not less than 80% of overall attendance in that semester taking into account the total number of periods (540 periods) in all courses put together attended by the candidate as against the total number of periods in all courses offered during that semester.
However, a candidate who could secure attendance between 70% and 80% only in the current semester due to medical reasons (hospitalization / accident / specific illness) or due to representing University in State / National / International / Inter University Sports events with prior permission from the Principal/Director shall be given exemption from the prescribed attendance and he/she shall be permitted to appear for the current semester examinations.
8.2 Candidates who do not complete the semester (vide clause 8.1) will not be permitted to write the end-semester examination and are not permitted to go to next semester. They are required to repeat the incomplete semester in the next academic year.
9. Examinations
9.1 A Candidate shall normally be permitted to appear for the University examination of the current semester if he/she has satisfied the semester completion requirements (vide Clause 8) and has registered for examination in all courses of that semester. Registration is mandatory for current semester examinations as well as arrears examinations.
9.2 The University examinations shall ordinarily be conducted between October and November during the odd semesters and between May and June in the even semesters.
9.3 The maximum marks for each theory course shall be 100 comprising of 50 marks for internal assessment (as detailed in 7.2) and 50 marks for the end semester University examinations.
9.4 The maximum marks for the theory cum studio based courses shall be 100 comprising of 50 marks for continuous internal assessment (as detailed in 7.3) and 50 marks for the end semester University examinations.
9.5 The maximum marks for the architectural design studio course shall be 300 comprising of 150 marks for continuous internal assessment, 150 marks through viva voce examination (as detailed in 7.4)
9.6 The maximum marks for the practical training during the VII semester shall be 300 marks comprising of 100 marks for continuous internal assessment and 200 marks through viva voce examination (as detailed in 7.5)
9.7 The maximum marks for the X semester thesis shall be 500 marks comprising of 300 marks for continuous internal assessment and 200 marks through viva voce examination (as detailed in 7.6)
10. Passing Requirements
10.1
a) For theory courses, a candidate shall be declared to have passed the examination, if she/he secures 25 marks out of 50 in the University examination and 25 marks out of 50 in the internal assesment.
b) If a candidate fails, he /she shall reappear in the University examinations of the next and subsequent semesters as supplementary candidate, till he /she secures a pass.
10.2
a) For theory cum studio-based courses, a candidate shall be declared to have passed in the examination if he / she secure 50% in the University examination and 50% in the internal assesment.
10.3
a) For Architectural Design studio courses, a candidate shall be declared to have passed the examination if she/he secures an aggregate of 150 marks, comprising of a minimum of 75 marks in continuous internal assessment and 75 marks in the viva voce for the portfolio of class records.
b) If a candidate fails to secure a minimum of 50% marks in the continuous internal assesment, he/she shall not be permitted to write the university examination and he/she shalll rejoin the semester concerned when in session next.
c) If a candidate fails to secure a minimum of 50% in the University Examination (viva voce), he/she shall reappear in the University examinations of the next and subsequent semesters as supplementary candidate, till he/she secures a pass.
10.4
a) For Practical Training, a candidate shall be declared to have passed if he/she secures a minimum of 50 marks out of 100 marks and 100 marks out of 200 marks in the viva voce examination.
b) If a candidate fails, he/she shall repeat the practical training and rejoin the subsequent semester after passing.
10.5
a) For thesis, a candidate shall be declared to have passed if he/she Secures an aggregate of 250 marks of the total of 500 marks with a minimum of 150 marks out of 300 marks in the continuous internal assessment by the review committee and a minimum of 100 marks out of 200 marks in the viva voce examination.
b) If a candidate fails to secure a minimum of 150 marks in the continous internal assessment he/she shall not be allowed to submit the thesis, he/she shall rejoin the X semester when in session next, secure the minimum marks and submit the thesis as in the case of regular candidates.
c) If a candidate fails to secure a minimum of 100 marks in the viva voce examination, he/she shall improve, resubmit the thesis on the same topic and appear for viva voce examination in the next semester. In such cases, the continuous internal assessment marks by the review committee already secured by the candidate shall remain valid.
d) If a candidate fails to secure a minimum of 100 marks in the viva voce examination and wishes to change the topic, he/she shall rejoin the X semester when in session next and go through the procedure as in the case of regular candidates.
10.6 A Candidate can apply for revaluation of his/her semester examination answer paper in a course, within 2 weeks from the declaration of results, on payment of a prescribed fee through proper application to the Controller of Examinations through the Head of Departments/Head of the Institution concerned. The Controller of Examination will arrange for the revaluation and the results will be intimated to the candidate concerned through the Head of the Institution. However, this provision shall not apply to the courses of Architectural Design, Practical Training and Thesis.
11. Issue of Mark sheets
Individual, mark sheet for each semester will be issued, containing the following information through the Principal concerned, after the publication of the results.
- The college in which the candidate studied.
- The marks obtained in each subject in internal assessment and University Examination.
- Whether the candidate has passed or failed in the courses concerned.
12. Eligibility for the award of Degree
a) A student shall be declared to be eligible for the award of the B.Arch Degree provided the student has:
i) Successfully completed the course requirements and has passed all the prescribed examinations in all the 10 Semester within a maximum period of 8 years (16 Semesters) reckoned from the commencement of the first semester to which the candidate was admitted.
ii) Attend atleast one educational tour.
iii) Obtained a certificate from the Principal/Director of the college, certifying participation in the NCC /NSS /NSO /YRC requirements
iv) No disciplinary action is pending against him/her.
b) The award of the degree must be approved by the Syndicate of the University.
13. Classification of the Degree awarded
13.1 A candidate who qualifies for the award of the Degree (vide clause12) having passed the examination in all the courses of all the ten semesters in his/her first appearance within ten consecutive semesters securing an aggregate of not less than 75% of total marks (Internal assessment plus semester exam marks) shall be declared to have passed the examination in First Class with Distinction. Further, the authorized break of study (vide clause14 (iii)) will not be counted for the purpose of classification.
13.2 A Candidate who qualifies for the award of the Degree (vide clause 12) having passed the examination in all the courses in the final eight semesters within the maximum period of ten consecutive semesters reckoned from the commencement of study in the third semester securing an aggregate of not less than 60% of total marks (Internal assessment plus semester exam marks) shall be declared to have passed the examination in First Class. For this purpose the authorized break of study (vide clause 14(iii)) will not be counted for the purpose of classification.
13.3 All other Candidate s (not covered in clauses 13.1 and 13.2) who qualify for the award of the degree (vide Clause 12) shall be declared to have passed the examination in Second Class.
13.4 A Candidate who is absent in semester examination in a course or viva voce after having registered for the same shall be considered to have appeared in that examination for the purpose of classification.
14. Temporary break of Study from a Programme
i) A Candidate is not normally permitted to temporarily break the study. However, if a candidate intends to temporarily discontinue the programme in the middle for valid reasons (such as accident or hospitalization due to prolonged ill health) and to rejoin the programme in a later semester he/she shall apply to the Registrar of the university in advance, in any case, not later than the last date for registering for the semester examinations of the semester in question, through the Head of the Department and Principal stating the reasons therefore.ii) The Candidate permitted to rejoin the programme after the break shall be governed by the rules and regulations in force at the time of rejoining.
iii) The duration specified for passing all the courses for the purpose of classification vide clause 13.1 and 13.2 shall be increased by the period of such break of study permitted.
iv) The total period for completion of the programme reckoned from, the commencement of the first semester to which the candidate was admitted shall not exceed the maximum period specified in clause 4 irrespective of the period of break of study in order that he / she may be eligible for the award of the degree (vide clause 12)
v) If any student is detained for want of requisite attendance, progress and good conduct, the period spent in that semester shall not be considered as permitted ‘Break of Study, and clause 14(iii) is not applicable for this case.
15. Educational Tour
Every student is required to undergo atleast one educational tour of minimum 10 days duration organized by the department. The students are expected to submit a tour study report to the head of the department.16. Site/Field Visit
Teachers shall take the students for site/field visits. Students are required to undergo such site or field visit for every course offered, starting from the first semester of the programme.
